Question and Answer

How can I best help my child cope with depression?

The most important thing you must do is give them the freedom to talk about their depression. This can bring to light factors that could be contributing to their depression for instance, rejection or punishment by their peers.

You should also teach your children sound values. They should be taught not to put too much value on material things so they do not build up an exaggerated sense of loss over them.

It's important that you build children's self-respect and self-esteem. Help them find their strengths. Some children grow up believing they're no good at all. Encourage your child to find something he can do well and feel a sense of mastery and accomplishment about.
